Property Tax Due Date beginning 2018 – November 15th

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT REAL/PERSONAL PROPERTY:

If I was not able to pay my taxes November 15, 2020, what will happen?

  • Late notices with intents to FIFA were mailed late January 2021
  • Tax Liens will be filed 30 days thereafter, list will be sent to tax sale company and fees will be added

I received a notice in May/June and then I received another notice in August.  The amounts are different.  Why?

  • The notice mailed in May/June was from the Tax Assessors Office with an estimation of the tax liability for the current year using the same millage rates as the prior year.  The millage rates are not set until after the County Commissioners and School Board finalize their budgets and hold meetings to set the millage rates.
  • The statement mailed in August was the actual tax bill for the current year which has the millage rate after the municipalities set their rates.  The amounts would change due to this reason, but the change is normally not a large amount.  Keep in mind, if you live inside city limits, each city bills for their themselves.

Am I receiving the homestead exemption?

  • On the right side and mid-page of the tax statement, there is a section that says exemptions.  If  an S1 is indicated, that’s a standard homestead.  There are other exemptions i.e. L1, L2, L3 and S5.  If you are still not sure you are receiving the exemption you should be getting, call the Tax Assessors Office (706) 754-2557.

Can I pay my property taxes on-line.

  • Yes.  The site to pay taxes on-line is www.habershamga.com.  Look under online payments, pay property taxes.  Enter ONLY ONE of the variables, not all, and follow the prompts.  Do not attempt to fill-in all the blanks on the search page.  Only one is necessary.  For example, last name.  Due date is November 15th.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MOTOR VEHICLES/MOBILE HOMES:

I purchased a vehicle.  How do I find the value that will be used to calculate the TAVT?

When I am coming into the office to renew tags, what do I need to bring with me?

  • Your driver license with the correct physical address on them
  • The renewal notices that were mailed or emailed by the Department of Revenue OR all your tag numbers

What if I cannot locate the renewal notices that were mailed to me by the Department of Revenue?

  • Make a list of your tag numbers or
  • If you do not have the tag numbers, we will try to assist you by pulling your driver license number or your name to locate your tags.

If my driver license does not have the correct physical address on them, how can I get this corrected?

  • Go to the closest Department of Driver Services or
  • Go on-line to www.dds.ga.gov and follow the instructions.  Print the last page to show the change was made.  The DDS will mail the new driver license within 30 days.  Remember, we cannot see the change unless we have the printed copy.

I would like to pick-up my parents (or other persons) tags as they are unavailable.  What do I need to bring with me so that I can do this for them?

  • A copy of the driver license for the primary owner with the correct physical address on them
  • The renewal notices that were mailed by the Department of Revenue or tag numbers

I need a tag for a vehicle I purchased from a dealer.  How do I purchase a tag?

  • Once the dealer advises the title has been processed (normally within 30 days), bring in your driver license, bill of sale and insurance binder
  • If you cannot locate your bill of sale, we will try to assist you by pulling your driver license number or your name.
  • If the dealer does not contact you close to the date the temporary tag will be expiring, you can call the tax office (706) 839-0120, give your driver license number and we will search to see if the title work has been completed.

I purchased a vehicle from an individual.  They have a payoff through the bank.  Therefore, the title is not available.  How can I legally drive my vehicle?

  • When a vehicle is purchased, the buyer has 7 days to purchase a tag.  Bring the following to the tax office:

A bill of sale which has the following information:

                                Date of purchase

Sellers name, address. phone number and signature

Buyers name, address phone number and signature

The year, make and vin number of the vehicle

                                Purchase price

*The bill of sale can be hand written or a preprinted form

Your driver license with the correct physical address on them

A copy of the insurance binder where insurance has been obtained

The cost is $1 for a temporary tag that is valid for 30 days from date of purchase

I paid $2000 for my 2014 Lexus.  Will that be the value used when calculating the TAVT?

  • No.  The value is downloaded into the system by Department of Revenue.  The values are set in accordance with the NADA Value Guide.  When the vin# is entered by the county processor, the value is automatically populated, and TAVT is based on that value.  Not the purchase price.

I need a tag for a vehicle I purchased from an individual and the title is available.  How do I purchase a tag?  While that sounds like an easy question, there are many variables.

  • If the vehicle has a Georgia Title, bring the following:

The title which has been signed by the seller

A bill of sale which has the following information:

                                Date of purchase

Sellers name, address, phone number and signature

Buyers name, address, phone number and signature

The year, make and vin number of the vehicle

                                Purchase price

*The bill of sale can be hand written or a preprinted form

Your driver license with the correct physical address on them

A copy of the insurance binder where insurance has been obtained

NOTE:   Georgia does not require a notary on the title.  THERE CAN BE NO MARK OUTS, MARK THROUGH OR WHITE OUT ON THE TITLE OR OTHER DOCUMENTS.  If this happens, other documents will be required.  If the documents do not appear authentic, the tax office can require verification.

  • If the vehicle has an Out of State Title (meaning not Georgia), bring the following:

The title which has been signed by the seller

If a notary is required, make sure properly executed/sealed.  They are notarizing the seller's signature.

A bill of sale which has the following information:

                                Date of purchase

Sellers name, address, phone number and signature

Buyers name, address, phone number and signature

The year, make and vin number of the vehicle

                                Purchase price

*The bill of sale can be hand written or a preprinted form

Your driver license with the correct physical address on them

A copy of the insurance binder where insurance has been obtained

                                Copy of last registration

NOTE:   Some states do require a notary on the title.  The seller's signature will be the one notarized.  Check the back of the title and have this executed/sealed at the time the seller signs the title.  THERE CAN BE NO MARK OUTS, MARK THROUGH OR WHITE OUT ON THE TITLE.  If this happens, other documents will be required.  If the documents do not appear authentic, the tax office can require verification.

Are the requirements the same for mobile homes as for motor vehicle when titling?

Yes.  But a copy of the paid tax receipt for the current year is also required.
